
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Overall management and command of the squadron: As the Squadron OC, Flt Lt. Hartwell is responsible for the running of 2344 Squadron from cadet welfare, to overseeing training.
- Wing Music Officer: Flt Lt. Hartwell was appointed Music Officer to Durham/Northumberland Wing in 2021, as such he is responsible for all music training and qualifications in the Wing
- Wing MOI Lead: In April 2023, Flt Lt. Hartwell was appointed the Wing’s Methods of Instruction Lead. This puts him in charge of delivering the MOI syllabus to cadets from across the Wing and overseeing their assessments.
Background:
Flt Lt. Hartwell joined the Corps as a cadet, aged 13, at 346 (Tynemouth) Squadron. During his time at 346, he enjoyed various activities: flying, shoot, and mostly- band! Flt Lt. Hartwell was instrumental in the formation of the Wing Band and its successes at performances such as Edinburgh Castle, and competitions such as the National Band Championships.
Flt Lt. Hartwell left the Corps to pursue a career in 2017. Though, having been invited back by the North Region Music Officer in 2019, he returned as a Civilian Instructor at 1156 (Whitley Bay) Squadron where he took on the role of Training Officer, before commissioning as an Officer.
Joining 2344 Squadron in May 2023, Flt Lt. Hartwell initially became the Squadron Executive Officer, immediately implementing good practice and streamlined administration. He was later appointed Commanding Officer in October that Year.
Outside the RAFAC:
Outside the Corps, Flt Lt. Hartwell is actively involved in a variety of musical groups and ensembles where he either conducts or plays trumpet (or another wind instrument). He’s often out and about at local venues entertaining the punters.
Besides music, being outdoors takes up a large portion of the boss’ time. He enjoys water sports, bike rides in the country, and walking and camping.
